The Lash

“Of pain you could wish only one thing: that it should stop. Nothing in the world was so bad as physical pain. In the face of pain there are no heroes.”
George Orwell, 1984

Invoke Nostalgia

“Gavin, I can’t talk to you here. People will call me crazy."

My imaginary friend smirked. "But you’re already talking to me."

"Well, I have to stop."

His smirk grew cocky. "I doubt you can resist."

And he was right. There was nothing I wanted more than to give my full attention to an imagined shadow and ignore those who ignored me in the real world. I wanted to talk out loud to Gavin―to play and laugh boisterously with him. In a dream I could justify such behavior, but to succumb to hallucinations while wide awake would only prove me insane.”

“You see all the other fellows were so active and earnest and all that sort of thing- always rampaging, and skirmishing, and scouring the desert sands, and pacing the margin of the sea, and chasing knights all over the place, and devouring damsels, and going on generally- whereas I liked to get my meals regular and then to prop my back against a bit of rock and snooze a bit, and wake up and think of things going on and how they kept going on just the same, you know!”

“I sometimes think about old tombs and weeds
That interwreathe among the bones of kings
With cold and poisonous berry and black flower:
Or ruminate upon the skulls of steeds
Frailer than shells and on those luminous wings -
The shoulder blades of Princes of fled power,
Which now the unrecorded sandstorms grind
Into so wraith-like a translucency
Of tissue-thin and aqueous bone

A Reverie of Bone

“And if these mountains had eyes, they would wake to find two strangers in their fences, standing in admiration as a breathing red pours its tinge upon earth's shore. These mountains, which have seen untold sunrises, long to thunder praise but stand reverent, silent so that man's weak praise should be given God's attention.”

Brides of Disdain

“Mama, Mama, help me get home
I'm out in the woods, I am out on my own.
I found me a werewolf, a nasty old mutt
It showed me its teeth and went straight for my gut.

Mama, Mama, help me get home
I'm out in the woods, I am out on my own.
I was stopped by a vampire, a rotting old wreck
It showed me its teeth and went straight for my neck.

Mama, Mama, put me to bed
I won't make it home, I'm already half-dead.
I met an Invalid, and fell for his art
He showed me his smile, and went straight for my heart.

-From "A Child's Walk Home," Nursery Rhymes and Folk Tales”

“The robin flew from his swinging spray of ivy on to the top of the wall and he opened his beak and sang a loud, lovely trill, merely to show off. Nothing in the world is quite as adorably lovely as a robin when he shows off - and they are nearly always doing it.” ― Frances Hodgson Burnett, The Secret Garden

Bertram's Staff

Shades of green dancing in the soft breeze
Gentle whispers call me in
Singing Aspen entrances me.

Listen… See…
“See what?” I ask
“What message is there in this for me?”
I am left unsure.

Life’s journey takes me to another place.
I walk along a different path
Unlooked for Aspen song reaches out.

Standing under a clear blue sky, I listen to rainfall
Far from home, I see again the Lochs of Maponus
Return! Seek! Learn!
Whispering Aspen entreats me.

The Last Garden

I grow plants for many reasons: to please my eye or to please my soul, to challenge the elements or to challenge my patience, for novelty or for nostalgia, but mostly for the joy in seeing them grow. – David Hobson

Persephone and her Unnamed Brother

Let me tell you something about me. I love vengeance like normal people love sunsets and long walks on the beach. I eat vengeance with a spoon like it's honey. In fact, I may not even be a real person, but just a vow of vengeance made flesh. - LAINI TAYLOR, Night of Cake & Puppets

The Township of Hillock

Gremlins live in my house and we are fine with it most days They bring cheer and joy to us in subtle elfish ways. They are well hidden in woodwork crevices and caches. But sometimes they get too mischievous and move our glasses Which bothers me little since I have forty pair. They seem to disappear every other Tuesday in thin air. Mine are polka dot and flowered and from the dollar store. Also striped, leopard and plaid, diverse colors galore. My husband thinks the gremlins are totally unfair, His glasses, prescription, cost much more than my forty pair. Hear that giggling coming from the air vent in the hall? They are my darling sneaky fun-loving gremlins small.
