Salt (Part 1)

This week on Dungeon Deep Dive, we're joined by our friendly neighbourhood DM Maddy! Our journey begins in ancient China, with the history of salt currencies, and runs through the rules of salt in magic and region. Finally Grace eases or sorrows with the science of tears.

Flags

This week is a bit of a tour de Lachlan de force you could call it, as Tully and Grace get to learn all about flags right on the air because Lachlan did too much research!

Flags are used by every country and by countless other groups as a symbol of their strength and unity, but why? Why were they so important in historic battles? And why exactly do different flags look the way the do? Find out the answers to these questions and relatively little else because the answers are kind of complicated this week on Dungeon Deep Dive.

Thieves

While Lachlan takes a break this week, Grace brings Ned Kelly; a controversial figure that everyone, including our special guest Brooke Reilly, can agree is a daddy. Brooke introduces us to both some inspirational Mob Moms and a cheeky bit of Dick Turpin. Then Tully wraps it up with the timeless troublemaker Robin Hood,,, who may not actually be that cool a guy.

Games

The first 20 sided die dates back to Ptolemaic Egypt, but people have been playing games a long time before our favourite polyhedron was born. It's another week of recording at home, and an edit shipped off to a fan with far more RAM than us (thanks Brooke). We take a snapshot of children's games, wander through some game theory, argue about the monty hall problem, and show you all the games the Buddha wouldn't play.

Until next time, keep playing games!

Textiles

Since people learned to cover their naughty bits, we've been using textiles! While we recorded from separate houses (and any one of us COULD have been working in the nude), it was a great chat about fabric throughout time. Tully coloured our days with talk of dyeing in various forms. Grace gave us a glittering account of what *might* be the golden fleece. And Lachlan talks us through cloth currency and how it worked in West Africa.

Hair

This week, the gang are talking all about hair, and why that's important. Grace takes us through the history of hair care, and what sort of methods were used historically. Then Lachlan takes us through an insightful (if harrowing) look at the significance of hair and personhood (between 28:46 and 45:30), and Tully kicks off with a quick overview at how hair is used as a cultural signifier, for community, and for discrimination.

Siege Machines

We've already told you how best to defend again a siege in your fancy freezing castle, but here's all the siege things you should keep in mind when you are the one besieging. Lachlan's gone deep into the political motivations for sieging and how people have gone about it in the past, Tully's all about how those nifty siege machines work and which ones aren't worth your time, and Grace is bringing you a whole bunch of cool spells to use and getting two DM's to give their opinion on the usefulness of them.

Funerals

It's a cheery episode this week as we here at DDD talk about funerals. Grace gets into some fun examples of interesting items people throughout history have been buried with, Lachlan gets into the concept of death and dying meant from back in ye olde days right up to our modern day approach to it, And then Tully shows us how people around the world say goodbye to those they love. We wrap it all up by giving you a fun adventure hook you can use to get your players really contemplating how they want to approach the inevitable end.

It's our first deep dive into a class specific ability! That's right, it's thieves' cant. Grace talks all about the rise of hobo symbols in the USA, and what they mean for you. Then Lachlan takes us on a linguistic journey into creoles and anti-languages, and finally Tully gives us some real terms to use in your cants. Guns (Part 2)

The gang go on a whopper of a deep dive, so big we split it in two!

It really is amazing that for all these years, people have stuck by their guns through thick and through thin. Despite incredible cost, unpredictability, and risk of accidental death, we continued to use firearms until we got them right.

Hiatus - Um

We're taking a holiday hiatus, so here's a little teaser of what we have in store after the break ;)

It's been a wild time for us at Dungeon Deep Dive, and due to a number of factors (new host, holidays, Tully forgetting to check the goddamn mics) we'll be taking a holiday hiatus. Rest assured, that doesn't mean you'll have to go without quality content, it just won't be quite as much.

This week you get to hear us fuck up. Enjoy.

In the meantime, don't forget to find us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram at @dungeondeepdive, or email us at deepdivetnc@gmail.com to let us know what you want to see! We'll be keeping them updated with game prep and homebrewing so head on over if you want more of our worldbuilding and content.
